The Hypnosis Session Explained

What is therapeutic hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation that allows you to access your subconscious mind. It can be compared to that numbing state between wakefulness and sleep.

Predominantly we are aware of our conscious mind and the thoughts it generates.

Cognitively we can acknowledge certain ways of thinking based on our learnt experiences and upbringings. But behind that scene lies a wealth of knowledge in a reservoir we call the subconscious.

Your cognitive mind stores about 12 to 15% of information in it. That leaves approximately 80% to the subconscious mind. Imagine what lies beneath!

This is the part of your being that stores information from all experiences of life. This subconscious mind is objective and recalls your experiences as they are, and not from a perspective of judgement.  So, when you access this part of you, you are accessing a storehouse of infinite knowledge.

This state can help you acknowledge limiting beliefs about yourself and give you the possibility to reframe them in the context of your present life.

As your conscious mind moves out of the way you are no longer bound by your ego’s rule and belief systems. What emerges is the true opportunity for lasting change.

Are you struggling to change a behaviour?

If you are trying to change a habit that you know is not good for you yet continuously fall off the wagon most likely its because your subconscious mind sees the benefit in keeping it. Somewhere stored in its memories is the belief that this brings me comfort. 

For example, if you are struggling to lose weight yet find yourself in front of the refrigerator late at night craving ice cream it could be that at some point in your life you found comfort during a difficult time by eating ice cream late at night.

Today you may unconsciously associate the ice cream with comfort and safety. So, what you are really battling is not stopping the late-night trips to the fridge but rather bringing closure to the event that triggered this behaviour in the first place.  This is how lasting change begins. 

Who controls the session? YOU DO!

It’s important to understand that the session is your session and that you get to decide where you are going. My role is to guide you and help you get there.  There is never a time during the session where you are out of control. Hypnotherapy is very different from stage hypnosis. Stage hypnosis is geared for entertainment and uses a different induction approach to therapeutic hypnosis.

In my sessions, I use relaxation inductions and guided imagery to help you get to where you are going.

The sessions are relaxing and geared to bring you clarity on the issues you are working through.

How many sessions will you need?

Well, that depends on the issue we are working on. Typically, 3 to 4 sessions are what is needed for lasting change, but this can vary. My sessions are customised to fit your needs and there is no cookie cutter program. However, there are some components that remain the same for everyone.

As each client is unique and presents a personal reason to seek hypnotherapy the sessions the structure remains the same.

Opening discussion/coaching

We begin the session by open dialogue to help me understand and to help you decide where you want to go and what you feel you need to change.  It is important to build trust together and important for me to cater the session to your own language.

1. Induction/relaxation

This is where the fun begins. An induction is simply a series of suggestions to help you relax and reach a deeper state of awareness.  It is a very important part of the session as it will allow you to gradually let go of your everyday thoughts and let your body and mind to relax.

2. Deepening the induction

Once the body is relaxed the mind can follow. Deepening the state of relaxation prepares the mind to be even more receptive to receiving positive help and suggestions.

3. The body of the session

This is where the work takes place. Together we will go through the process needed for the change to begin.   Referring to the discussion in the beginning of the session I will lead you through positive suggestions addressing the subconscious mind. Your subconscious mindknows exactly what it causing your issue and will always guide you towards the ANSWER.

4. The return and awakening.

Oftentimes the client is so relaxed they do not want to come back.   So, my approach is to always bring you back with gentleness. You will never be snapped out of it. It will be a gradual slow process. As you return to a wakeful state, I will encourage you to remember your session and return with vitality and energy.

The closing

After you return, we will discuss the session and you will have the opportunity to share your experience and ask questions.  This is also where we will discuss the follow ups and next steps for your sessions if needed.
